Lauren Book Combats The ‘Terrible Awful’ Of Sexual Abuse
While Lauren Book is talking on the phone, a little girl giggles in the background. This is Book’s 4-year-old Kennedy Grace, the twin of Hudson Lee,…
Lauren’s Kids is based in South Florida and educates adults and children about sexual abuse prevention through in-school curricula, awareness campaigns and speaking engagements around the country and the world. Our mission is to prevent child sexual abuse through education and awareness, and to help survivors heal with guidance and support.
In October of 2018, Hurricane Michael ravaged the Florida Panhandle and destroyed more than physical buildings. Child abuse survivors at the Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center lost safe spaces to heal. From therapy sessions on downed tree trunks and in the parking lots of fast-food restaurants, the loss of homes, schools, friends, and “normal life” – abuse survivors and their therapists overcome obstacles to find joy, love and healing with the help of a fellow survivor, advocate, and Florida Senator who is determined to demonstrate that strength and resilience can be found even after the darkest of storms. You won’t want to miss their emotional Journey Home.
Child sexual abuse is a silent epidemic. It occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education. When sexual abuse does occur, 75% of child victims do not disclose within a year – 45% keep their abuse a secret for at least 5 years, many stay silent for decades, and some never tell.
But 95% of this abuse is preventable through education and awareness – and with guidance and support, victims can heal into thriving survivors. Together, we can shine light into dark places.
