State Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto (R – Ft. Myers) filed SB542 yesterday, seeking to allow secret recordings of child abusers in court. The bill was filed in response to the recent McDade v. State of Florida ruling disallowing such evidence.
Lauren Book, Founder and CEO of Lauren’s Kids, is a strong champion of the bill: “Last month’s McDade vs. State Florida Supreme Court ruling prevents prosecutors from using secret recordings made by children to prove they are being abused – it’s just not within the bounds of current Florida law, and that’s just not acceptable. The Florida Supreme Court agreed, directly calling upon the lawmakers to fix it.”
