Walk in My Shoes Day 4: Florida City, Miami-Dade

The morning began with a bang, with a crowd chanting “Lauren, Lauren…Si Se Puede!” as she got off the bus to speak at a Rally put together by MUJER. After a small-group empowerment session with incredible youth from the Homestead/Naranja community, MUJER provided a delicious lunch. Then it was time to walk up US-1 to Goulds Church of Christ. More than 70 people joined us for the 2 hour walk, carrying signs, chanting and sharing the Lauren’s Kids wristbands with everyone we passed. A survivor named Vanessa — who used to be paralyzed and was rockin’ and rolling with us in her scooter — walked the final mile with Lauren, slow and steady, one foot in front of the other, using her cane to finish the walk segment, showing how truly strong survivors can be. We reached Goulds Church of Christ, where they had sandwiches and snacks for all walkers…thank you, Goulds! We then continued on walking through Naranja to end the day at Publix at Briar Bay. To add to the excitement, Congressman Joe Garcia came by to congratulate everyone throughout the day and sign our vehicles.
